Jive Bunny

If you ever think the current Pop charts are total rubbish, just be thankful that it’s not 1982!...

There was an outfit then called ‘Jive Bunny’ who had a succession of Pop hits in the UK, and these were despicable pieces of work, loathed by every music-lover under the age of 30.

The formula was, record a massive handclap on the ‘2’ and the ‘4’ for three minutes, and then underneath, fill in an endless segway of re-recorded hooklines of recent bona-fide chart hits. 

It was lowest common denominator music, none lower.

It was a business plan in 4/4 time, and - unfortunately - it ruled.

I was seriously into Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Goth Rock…

I was working in a recording studio at that time, doing my tape-op thing on whatever session was booked on. And one evening, who should be booked in but none other than Jive Bunny!

I realised the course of history was in my hands!

I would dutifully make coffee and press ‘record’ all evening long. But then, at the end, I would press record - ‘by mistake’ - on the handclap track, and erase it - trashing the whole recording!!!

I could save humanity from the next Jive Bunny single! The UK would thank me for it, I would be jobless, but my future career as (Young) People’s Hero would be assured!

But I didn’t do that. 

I did the session, was later fired for other - less noble - reasons, and became a guitar player.

I’m really sorry, everyone.
