Me and Rory Gallagher

If I’m honest, he was a big guitar hero of mine, way back in the day. I was an introverted, plaid shirt-wearing blues-rock fan in my early teens, and Rory was raw and exciting! ‘Irish Tour (fill in the year)’ - I had them on vinyl, played them loads.

That was until Punk/New Wave happened.

1976 was year zero in London, and a breathtaking blast of Punk energy swept in, and swept me away with it.

Course, I was still desperately shy, but by 1983 I was working as a tape-op in a big recording studio in London. We did a steady stream of James Bond film soundtracks, some big bands, but also plenty of library music, and ads - jingles.

I was booked to do another jingle, plugging in mics, ‘scratching round’ (checking they worked), and making sure the session ran smoothly - in my fairly unskilled way. It was a five-piece band, musicians booked separately by an agent.

As the start time approached, I noticed a Fender Stratocaster lying on a chair in the guitar booth, and this strat had been through a rough time! Beaten to hell, hardly any paint on it…

As I went out to the control room, into the live room came Rory Gallagher.

He looked at me as we passed in the doorway. I think it’s fair to say he didn’t look well, in some ways similar to his guitar. He was quite overweight too, and from what I’ve heard since, was going through a rough time of his own.

But I recognised him.

He could probably have used a couple of minutes of gushing hero-worship, but that would’ve involved me speaking to another human being, so I said nothing.

He was a star guitar player, incredibly talented, very hard-working, and doing whatever was needed to pay the bills.
