The Pull Focus Noise Gate

Noise gates seem to crop up a lot in our pedals. 

I’ve never been that much into noise gates in the past. Never owned one as a pedal ‘cos they seemed a bit…. Boring? No adding, just taking away.

But in dealing with stuff that happens between the notes when you’re not playing - eg reverb tails, echo repeats feeding back, or just a ton of cable hum from a high gain distortion - a noise gate can be truly amazing!!!!

Of course it’s easy to understand why a gate is good when you’ve got hiss and crackles you just don’t want, but chopping off the other delay-based ambiences can be incredibly dramatic, give a top-and-tailed ‘sample’ vibe to a phrase, or just draw attention to your playing in an original way. 

The Reverb-X is a great example of this, and the distortion on the reverb only adds to the drama. The Echo-X can do the echo equivalent - while giving the player the feeling of more control over the repeats in real-time.

However the Pull Focus has a noise gate that cuts the background noise, but also - set to ‘reverb’ - has the reverb-chopping side of it, AND does this not only in silent sections but when a new note comes along. 

This gives a near-field/far-away dynamism to your playing (hence the pedal name).

Set it strongly and it’s all notes swelling with huge active sustain. 

Set it more subtly though and your audience may feel the effects of it without actually realising what’s happening - and just notice your playing more, how epic all your long bends are!
